While leaked emails from the Sony hack-tastrophe didn’t give everything away, they did reveal that the social app’s CEO Evan Spiegel wanted to find a way to use the network to promote up-and-coming acts, and that may just be the beginning. Snapchat has been looking into incorporating music for some time now, and this is likely just one of the first steps. Snapchat is a for-profit firm, and they do benefit from these songs being “streamed” (for lack of a better word), so royalties must be paid-no matter how short the video being sent may be.

While adding music to snaps is certainly fun for users, there is some concern about whether the artists whose tunes are being used are going to be compensated properly. Tech blog The Next Web discussed their own experiences with the new feature, saying “there were some issues with the app”, including it crashing and recording music at high volumes, forcing users to shout to be heard. The company didn’t make a big announcement around this latest feature, instead letting the word spread organically.
